Accommodation near the beach?

by Loraine Dunn
(Scotland)

Camps Bay towards Lion's Head

Camps Bay towards Lion's Head

I am travelling to Johannesburg in 2 weeks and would like to fly and spend a few days in Cape Town.

A friend suggested to stay at a hotel on the Waterfront Could you recommend some hotels to me please?

Was thinking of a Holiday Inn (if there is one) or a hotel to that kind of standard perferably with a pool and a good view of Table Mountain and the sea.

It would be good if it is within walking distance to the beach as well.

And yes we would like to go to Table Mountain. Would we need to hire a car

Hope you can help.

To start with, if you decide on a hotel near the Waterfront, you won't be within walking distance of a decent beach. The V&A Waterfront is a big attraction of course with lots of restaurants, shops, markets and the Two Oceans Aquarium. You could take a ferry to Robben Island and the topless explorer buses run from the aquarium.

There are plenty of hotels in the vicinity to choose from. The Holiday Inns have been taken over by Southern Sun in Cape Town and they and the Protea range are reputed to offer excellent value for money.

It's difficult for me to suggest any particular hotel - there are so many, and most have pools, but check out this page for a hotel selection and map. Protea Hotels Cape Town

If you want to stay near a beach which is not too far from the Waterfront then I suggest Camps Bay which is around 8kms from the city. Upmarket beach resort, lots of facilities and one of the best tourist beaches on the Peninsula. See these pages.

There are plenty of sedan taxis operating in Cape Town and you will find a bus service running from the station, which will take you to the Table Mountain cable station. Also easily accessible from Camps Bay.

There are a few tourist information centres in the city.
I recommend the one in Lower Burg st. Your hotel will also assist you with information.

In the meantime, here's an interesting travel guide. Cape Town Travel Guide
