If you are under the age of 26, you may apply for hostel and student/youth discount cards which allow you to get reduced rates while backpacking or travelling in most countries including South Africa. As a registered student you should be eligible for a student card through your university, so if you intend to travel during your vacation, make your enquiries in advance. The student card will allow discounts on local attractions, and concessions on transport. You have to be either under the age of 26, or show evidence of your student status to be eligible.
