Student card
If you are under the age of 26, you may apply for hostel and student/youth discount cards which allow you to get reduced rates while backpacking or travelling in most countries including South Africa.

As a registered student you should be eligible for a student card through your university, so if you intend to travel during your vacation, make your enquiries in advance.

The student card will allow discounts on local attractions, and concessions on transport. You have to be either under the age of 26, or show evidence of your student status to be eligible.

The VIP card

VIP membership has become very popular because it allows you to get discounts on hundreds of tours, travel and accommodations worldwide - including hostel accommodation in South Africa, Europe, Oceania and Asia.

You can also use your VIP membership card as a rechargeable phone card, providing cheaper international phone calls, access to messages and a free email account. You get a US$5 bonus when you top up your card with US$20 or more - plus a US$10 bonus when you top-up your 2 Year Card.

How you save

There are lots of advantages to VIP membership for student or youth travellers. The VIP Card entitles you to cheaper hostel accommodation, and discounts on many worldwide travel services, tours and purchases. You get cheaper airline, bus and train fares which gives you more money to spend at your destination.

There are 700 VIP backpackers hostels around the world including 55 in South Africa. Each offers top class facilities including 24 hour access and lots of useful local information.

When you become a VIP member you get a comprehensive guide book containing information about VIP membership, and detailing accommodation venues and discounts in South Africa, Australia and around the world.
