Some essential family
travel insurance facts

Family Travel Insurance
Sufficient medical or health cover is the most important consideration when deciding on your family travel insurance. It is important to be certain that you have medical treatment cover at all points on your journey. Your policy should include the cost of an air ambulance flight back home and access to a medical support telephone number if necessary.

If you are a citizen of a European Community country travelling in Europe, you can make use of form E111, available at post offices, which allows access to medical facilities between member countries. The cover offered would be basic and limited to the cover available within your own country. As such it may not fully cover the cost of treatment. Additional medical fees could be applicable.

Valuable items of luggage and other equipment such as a laptop computer, may not be fully covered by your standard family travel insurance and it would be necessary to buy extra cover. As such it may be cheaper or more convenient to arrange separate foreign travel insurance. If you have a household policy, check that it may provide cover for certain vauable items away from home.

Business travel: Generally employers are responsible for insuring company equipment in transit such as laptop computers or vehicles. Some employers provide standard international travel insurance, but this may have to be extended to suit personal requirements

Restrictions and exclusions: Before you buy your holiday travel insurance, make sure that you familiarize yourself with the benefits and conditions. These should be easily accessible online.

Travel insurance and health insurance providers generally have conditions requiring that the insured person is responsible for an 'excess' which is payment of a predetermined portion of any claim. There may also be restrictions on the cover of certain luggage and valuables.

The foreign travel insurance options on this page have been selected for their ease of use. Remember that your family travel insurance requirements are not to be taken lightly.

Choose your travel insurance policy with care, bearing in mind that should you overlook anything, you will be away from home, in Cape Town South Africa or elsewhere, possibly facing unexpected medical bills and unable to make the necessary policy adjustments in time.

Remember that peace of mind is always the best option available!
